Why Study Abroad at ACT?

Students today must prepare to live and function productively in culturally, economically and linguistically diverse business and social settings.  Living and studying abroad is an essential part of such preparation.  It is a life-changing and enriching experience that encourages growth and independence and can help a student mature, personally and intellectually.  The "immersion" into a culture's customs, people and language broadens a student's intellectual horizons; deepens his/her knowledge and understanding of international, political, and economic issues; provides an unparalleled opportunity to develop genuine fluency in a foreign language; and helps develop other important transnational competencies that can set one apart in a very competitive job market.

Why Greece?
Greece is a land of mythical proportions.  No doubt, it has given us thousands of postcard images.  But Greece also stands at the crossroads of cultures and civilizations.  It is a country of beautiful contradictions where one can relive history and trace the evolution of western thought.  Walk through the olive groves, through ancient sites, to thousand-year-old monasteries.  Visit sparsely inhabited islands.  Roam from the sun-drenched white sand beaches to rocky mountains and explore breathtaking scenery.

And for the Greeks living in America, Greece will always be home.  For years now, Greek American youth have come to the American College of Thessaloniki as study abroad students, for a summer, a semester or year, or to complete their studies here pursuing degrees in Business, International Relations, Diplomacy, Computer Science and even English and Psychology.  We helped re-acquaint them with the Hellenic culture, language, and history and helped them build pride in their Hellenic heritage.  We believe such awareness and pride are crucial to keeping Hellenism alive in America, something central to our mission.

Why Thessaloniki?
Thessaloniki, a crossroads of the East and West and gateway to Southeastern Europe, blends over 2,000 years of history with a modern and exciting metropolis.  A college town with over 100,000 college and university students, it is a human scaled, modern city, with over a million inhabitants.  Numerous archaeological and historical monuments, remarkable natural sites and settlements, a strong sense of hospitality, thousands of cafes and restaurants catering to every taste, high-end designer boutiques, open markets, theater, ballet and film festivals, soccer matches and sailing races are all part of the city's cultural fabric.

The weather in Thessaloniki is temperate with over 300 sunny days a year.  Halkidiki, with some of the region's most beautiful and popular sandy beaches and small resort towns that bristle with activity in the summer, is just an hour away.  Weekend excursions to the Sporades islands, to Istanbul, Ancient sites of Alexander the Great and the quaint towns and villages of the region are pleasant diversions.  Mt. Olympus and other challenging hiking, climbing, rafting, snow skiing in the winter, and other outdoor activities are also within reach.
